Of Hyacinth Macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus) or "Arara-azul" in Brazil
Nearly endemic to Brazil - primarily found in the Pantanal Wetlands
Status: endangered

Context:
The majestic, breathtaking Arara-azul is nearly endemic to Brazil, primarily found in the Pantanal Wetlands in the States of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul. The species has suffered major declines due to loss of habitat and illegal animal trade. It is currently classified as endangered with an estimated population of 6,500. Conservation efforts include raising local awareness of its status, which has helped reduce illegal pet trafficking, and innovative conservation efforts, notably the collaborative efforts between the Caiman Ecological Refuge, a National Geographic top-rated Ecolodge, and the Hyacinth Macaw Project.
